June has been associated with the LGBTQ community in the United States since the end of the 60s, after the 1969 Stonewall Inn riots. It is easy to forget that the happy Pride Month parades and celebrations of diversity actually started as a protest against police raids targeting queer spaces in New York City. The Stonewall uprising kickstarted the whole LGBTQ movement in the US. The community owes much of their modern rights and social acceptance to queer activists such as drag queen Marsha P. Johnson, transgender woman Sylvia Riviera and lesbian Stormé DeLarverie. These exceptional women are among the most important people in queer history.
After the June 28th, 1969 Stonewall uprising, a march was held annually on their anniversary day in New York City and several other US cities to commemorate the brave people who stood up against discrimination and violence targeting LGBTQ folks. Throughout the years, the yearly march morphed into the parade we know today: a celebration of all sexual and gender identities diversity. It also stands as a strong reminder of the struggle to obtain equal rights for the community.
To this day, the New York Pride March is still held every year on the last Sunday of June and gathers over 2 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer people and their allies. This is one of the largest yearly Pride events in the world. Pride Month parades and celebrations are usually held on or around June 28th, the day of the Stonewall Inn riots, but some cities prefer the cooler months of August and October to hold their festivities.
